There are a variety of local attractions and events in Evanston and Uinta County, each offering a unique opportunity and insight into local community life.

Attractions within Evanston:

 B.E.A.R. Parkway runs along the section of the Bear River that flows through Evanston.

 Bear River State Park is Wyoming's newest State Park.

 Depot Square Park is the center of community activities, which include square dancing, melodramas, exhibits, art shows, concerts, etc.

 Evanston Community Recreation Center offers a full range of recreational activities in a modern facility.

 Historical buildings that can be seen at Depot Square Park are the restored Union Pacific Depot, the Uinta County Museum/Carnegie Library, Beeman-Cashin Building, and the Chinese Joss House.

Attractions within a reasonable driving distance from Evanston:

 Almy: Along Highway 89, north of Evanston, is Almy, a very rich coal mining area in the late 1800's. After numerous explosions in which many lives were lost, the mines were abandoned. There is still an old cemetery there.

 Bear River City: Located 10 miles south of Evanston on Highway 150, this was the rough and tough "end of the tracks" town before the rails moved on to Evanston.

 Cross-country Skiing: Groomed trails and tracks are available 30 miles south of Evanston in the Wasatch-Cache National Forest. They are managed by the Evanston Parks and Recreation District. Cross -county skiing is also available at Bear River State Park in Evanston.

 Hunting, Fishing, Backpacking, and Camping: Evanston is adjacent to the Wasatch-Cache and Ashley National Forests, State land, and Bureau of Land Management land. All offer a wide variety of outdoor recreational experiences.

  • Bear Lake, 60 miles north of Evanston, has many recreational opportunities.
  • Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area is 80 miles east of Evanston, This 90-mile-long lake has approximately 375 miles of shoreline ranging from low flats to cliffs more than 1,500 feet high. Camping, snowmobiling, fishing, boating, water skiing, and  sightseeing can be enjoyed there.
  • Sulphur Creek Reservoir, about 15 miles south of Evanston, offers great fishing and wind surfing.
  • The Uinta Mountains are just 30 miles south of Evanston on Highway 150. Fishing, camping, wilderness excursions, and other recreational opportunities can all be found in the High Uintas.
  • Woodruff Narrows, 20 miles north of Evanston on Highway 89, is a good fishing spot.

 Fort Bridger: Jim Bridger, a famous mountain man, built Fort Bridger as a trading post in 1843. Many of the original buildings have been restored. The Fort is 40 miles east of Evanston on Interstate 80.

 Fossil Butte National Monument: This attraction lies approximately 70 miles from Evanston. The underlying Wasatch formation is most famous for fossilized fragments of primitive horses, tortoise shells, ancestral monkeys, snakes, birds and crocodiles. The visitor station has displays explaining the story of Fossil Butte. Interpretive wayside markers follow the trail from the visitor station to the site of the old fossil quarries on the Butte.  Guided walks are given on an informal  schedule.

 Piedmont Kilns and Ghost Town: About 25 miles southeast of Evanston is the old transcontinental railroad bed. The Kilns were used to make the charcoal taken to the iron ore smelters in Utah. The ghost town, named Byrne, was a lumber community before the railroad came.

Events:

 Live Parimutuel Horse Racing: Wyoming Downs is located 8 miles north of Evanston on Highway 89. Memorial Day through Labor Day, weekends and holidays, enjoy thoroughbred and quarterhorse racing, parimutuel betting, food, drinks and excitement. Year round horse racing and parimutuel betting from tracks around the world can be enjoyed at Wyoming Offtrack Betting.

 City Band Concerts: Enjoy free concerts in the park on Sunday evenings during July and August presented by the Evanston City Band.

 A Day at the Bear: A river festival at the B.E.A.R. Parkway. Events include a rubber duck race down the Bear River and a barbecue.

 Bear River Mountain Man Rendezvous: Mountain man/black powder rifle activities and contests with tipis set up at Bear River State Park.

 Chili Cook Off: Booths, food, entertainment, and trophies. This event attracts thousands of participants and has raised well over $100,000 for local charities.

 Chinese New Year  Celebration: Celebrates Evanston's Chinese heritage.

 Cowboy Days: PRCA "Biggest Little Rodeo in the World", parade, barbecue and entertainment.

 Fort Bridger Rendezvous: Mountain man/black powder rifle activities and contests. Tents and tipis are set up on the grounds of historic Fort Bridger.

 Fourth of July: Fireworks display.

 High Uintas Classic "Over the Top" Bicycle Stage Race: A competitive bike race through the Uinta Mountains.

 Old-Fashioned Christmas: Santa arrives in Evanston in a horse-drawn sleigh the Saturday following Thanksgiving to greet the local children.  From then until Christmas, evenings and weekends are filled with concerts, arts and crafts fairs, activities for children, and good old-fashioned holiday cheer. The NutCracker, a popular theatrical production, is presented.

 Sagebrush Theater: Community theatrical productions.

 Support your Community Week: Recognizes community volunteers and partnerships.

 Uinta County Fair: Exhibits, food, entertainment, and livestock sale.

 Western States Rodeos: A summer rodeo series.
